Sparks from the new Coil

|
On this image you see my favourite spark of the year 2007. Itīs 1000mm in lenght, thats 2.7 times the coil that produces it. I am very proud of this coil, because I have never seen a spark like this from a 3" teslacoil on the net.
Because I wanted to exchange the image on the index page I tried to push the 3" coil to itīs limits again to get same pretty long sparks as some years ago with the old 3" coil at full power. I used two neons in series for 13KV@200mA. I also opened the safety gaps because I configured them for the 6,3KV neon. With this configuration I got a very pretty spark output. Both hits on this image measure 900mm. Exposure time is ― second at ISO 400 again. Here is a nice 920mm hit. Exposure time is ― second, aperture is f/ 2.8, sensibility is ISO400, the image is take in compete darkness. Very nice sparks at ― second exposure time Here you see two very energetic sparks with over 900mm length. In this image you see how much power this coil is able to handle, the thin strike on the left is 1m long. Here is a 8 seconds image taken in complete darkness. In this picture you see two 920mm strikes to the gropunded ladder and a quite stronk rail-hit. I decided to put this picture on my page because of the two very strong strikerail hits in 3,2 seconds. I think this arc would have killed my neons if there wouldnīt have been a strikerail that grounds the energy. This image looks quite similar as one from my 4 inch coil, you see that there isnīt much space left around the coil, the streamers are all over 800mm -> thats an area of 2m diameter that this small coil needs. Spark output maxed out on this image. There is a 1000mm strike on the left and one 900mm strike on the right, great coil. Today I got my new camera that I choose especially for tesla shootings. Itīs probably the best not SLR camera on the market right now. I also shoot nature and all other kind of images with this camera. If you want to see more (non tesla) pictures you can visit my photo page. Ok, back to the 3" coil: I first decided to hook the coil up with a small 500VA neon transformer with 6,3KV@80mA. The new camera shows much more details especially at longer exposure times. I shoot the following image with 8 seconds exposure time, aperture was f /3.2, chip speed rating ISO 400. Although with 400 ISO the images have a lot more noise, the pictures get very good with this sensibility. With this 500VA configuration the coil is able to produce 600mm sparks to the grounded alu-ladder. The next image was taken with 4 seconds exposure time to reduce the ambient light a little (with success). The strike to the left measures 550-600mm, also notice the strikerailhit on the right. Iīve finally reached 2,5 times the winding lenght of the 3 inch coil, thatīs 920mm! Also see the movie. Here is the longest spark of the new 3 inch Coil I was able to achieve until November 06. It measures 900mm. (thats 2,4 times the winding lenght) This is the longest spark I achieved at first ligh, the spark to the ladder is 700mm long (thatīs 1,8 times the winding lenght), not bad for the first light, my goal for this coil would be 2 times the WL. Some nice streamers of the 3" teslacoil, PSU is 12KV 100mA MOT powersupply, MMC is 13,3nF. Notice the funny looking strikerail hit in this picture. Picture shows very strong arc to ground. One of the best pictures I took at first light, exposure time was 1/2 second. Some nice streamers in another direction. Picture showing some streamers and ground hit, I am very satisfied with this coilīs performance at first light. Here is the coil running at 2750VA Neontransformer-Powersupply. The supply is rated 12KV @ 235mA. Here is a strikerail-hit at full power. The spark was much more intense then it looks in this image. Some nice streamers ( up to 900mm long) with the 2750VA Neontransformersupply. This is another strike at 900mm distance. Nice streamer of nearly 1000mm lenght. This picture shows what some coilers call the banjo effect. Picture with 2 seconds exposure time. |
