20A Controller

Here you see the 20A powercontroler with its plexiglass front-panel. There is one 25A meter for the input current and one 25A meter for the output curent of the variac. There are two 250V meters for the HV-trafo and the controllable light output.

The controler works in two modes that switch automatically when power is enabled from the power input connectors. Mode 1 is 1-phase mode from a normal 1-phase 16A wall-socket. The second mode is 2-phase mode. This mode is switched on when power is enabled in the 5 pin 20A connector on the back. 1 phase is used for the 20A variac and one of the two others is used for sparkgap, light and relay switching.

The sparkgap can switched permanently on and automatically on with the HV transformer. The HV-transformer is switched On and Off by two buttons on the bottom of the front-panel. In the middle is a emergency-off button, with the same function than the Off button, but much bigger and easier to initate.

On the left is a seperate variac for the light output which I use for operating-photographs of the coil by darkness.

There are two massive handholds on the left and right side to carry it around.

This is the remote control of this powercontroler, itīs just one On and one Off Button.

Here you see the fuses of this controler. 1st fuse is 2A for the light socket-output, 2nd fuse is 6A for sparkgap socket-output, 3rd fuse is 16A for HV-trafo output, 4th fuse is 6A for the 2nd phase (only used in 2 Phase mode), the 5th fuse is 25A for the transformer phase (only in two phase mode) and the 6th fuse is 16A for the transformer phase (in single phase mode).

Here are the connectors on the back of the controler. Left is the socket for the sparkgap, besides the connector for the light and to the right is the red wall socket for the HV-transformer. The white ballastsocket is N.C.. Next to it are two IEC connectors for 1 phase 16A input and for the remote control.

The two 5 pin sockets are for 2 phase 20A power input and for conbined output (transformer, Sparkgap and light in one cable).

This is the powercontroler with the front panel removed. On the left is the filter unit, double-linefilter for ona phase 20A. In the middle is the variac for 10A continuous and 20A for 10 minutes. On the left are the current transformers for the thw 25A meters and the three 20A relays.

This is the front panel viewed from behind. You can see the 1A variac for the light-output, the 4 Ampere and Volt indicators and the switches and buttons for control.

This is the controler with opened front panel, The cables on the left are 4mmē connections, directly switched input powerrails, switched by a 3x 25A power switch. All the other powercables in the controler are 2,5mmē to handle 20A of current for several minutes

Update on May 28th 2007:

Somehow the HV from my 3KVA Dual NST Powersupply connetet through the core to the LV contacts and blew some components of the powercontroler. I decided to rebuild it und apply some VDRs to all In and Outs (except the remote control).

The fuses were reduced to the basic outputs.

The 5 Pin In and Outputs were removed becaus I havenīt used them anyway.

I also redused the electronic department to the basic features, only the Trafo output is switched by electric contactor, the light and sparkgap is directly switched by the 10A breaker on the front panel.

Here is the reduced filter and electronic section, two 2 stage SCHAFFNER filter in parallel; the 2 current transformers for the ampere-meters and the trafo-output contactor.
